Onkyo HT S5800 vs. HT S7700: Design and Dimensions
Both Onkyo HT S5800 and Onkyo HT S7700 are 5.1.2-channel setups. Both are Dolby Atmos ready. 5.1.2-channel setups can give you awesome surround performance because they reproduce the sounds in a three dimensional space. If you are not familiar with such setups, note that the first number (5) indicates the number of satellite speakers, the second number (1) indicates the number of subwoofer, and the third number (2) indicates the number of height speakers. Because the system takes into account height measurements, the surround performance can be even more immersive and realistic.
Nevertheless, each of the two models includes one receiver and six speakers including the subwoofer. There are two satellite speakers, one center channel, and two front speakers. The two front speakers are armed with Dolby Atmos toppers so that they can also function as the height speakers. The other speakers of the two models are identical. A front speaker has 5” and 3 1/4″ cone woofers as well as a 1” dome tweeter. Even though Onkyo HT S5800 is available at a lower price point than Onkyo HT S7700, it is actually comparable to the more expensive model in terms of features. Onkyo HT S5800 and Onkyo HT S7700 come with very similar features. For sure, both models are ready for networking. Both receivers have been equipped with complete connectivity options; both come with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless connections as well as USB and Ethernet ports for wired options. Both receivers are able to read files directly from flash drives through the USB ports.
Both models also come with built-in web apps for various streaming services, such as Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM Internet Radio, and Slacker. The system will automatically measure various aspects and configure the settings to optimize the speakers. In general, the automatic calibration is fairly good, great for non-technical users. However, audiophiles may want to calibrate the speakers manually for the best audio quality.
Onkyo HT S5800 vs. HT S7700: Performance
Generally speaking, both models have great output qualities and performance. However, in comparison with Onkyo HT S5800, Onkyo HT S7700 is actually able to produce slightly higher output power to the speakers for higher overall volume levels. The output rating of Onkyo HT S5800 is 115 Watts per channel, whereas Onkyo HT S7700’s is 120 Watts per channel. The difference is not a very large one, but still noticeable. If you are going to install the home theater system in a large room, you may want to choose Onkyo HT S7700 to make sure that the sound can be loud enough to fill the room. Due to the higher power and slightly larger subwoofer, you can also expect Onkyo HT S7700’s bass to be fuller and more powerful.
