Despite the higher number in its name (“850B” vs “800B”), Sony XBR65X850B was actually released first in March 2014 while Sony XBR65X800B had only begun to be available on the market by January 2015. As the newer product, Sony XBR65X800B is better than Sony XBR65X850B, isn’t?
Well, XBR65X850B’s price is still higher than XBR65X800B’s, and we all have the tendency of thinking that expensive products are better than the cheaper ones. However, the price gap is not that large – they both are in US$ 2000 – 3000 range. We will compare these two Smart TVs to find out which one is actually better. And, for practicality reasons, I will refer Sony XBR65X800B as simply 800B, and Sony XBR65X850B as 850B (less headache for you too, readers).
They both have dual-core processor in their system. Though they implemented the same Frame Dimming to generate good shadows, 850B is equipped further with TriLuminous Display. 800B doesn’t have such feature. Therefore, 850B is able to produce more colors to create more vibrant and vivid images. In terms of contrast, they both deliver excellent contrast and blacks.
The next difference between them is the 3D support. 850B supports Passive 3D view, while 800B does not support 3D at all. This, together with the lack of TriLuminous Display, create major drawbacks on 800B.

Conclusion
The newer product is not always better. That is why the term “old but gold” exists. Between Sony XBR65X800B and Sony XBR65X850B, the older 850B gives better value for your money.
